College of Nursing Renovation, Floors 2-5
Medical University of South Carolina | Charleston, South Carolina
The intent of this renovation of a 1950’s dormitory into new departmental offices and classrooms, was to have a design that incorporated traditional details, reflecting the history and traditions of the nursing profession with current technologies, to create a teaching and office environment that will last for another 50+ years. The owner wanted the character of the spaces to be respectful of the past and be able to display historical artifacts throughout the building, while creating a modern/contemporary feel. The interiors are a blend of historic architectural detailing with playful interior finishes in more casual-use areas such as break rooms, computer rooms, etc. The program also included state-of-the-art IT and AV requirements for distance learning and simulation teaching spaces.
The renovation included a complete interior renovation of floors 2-5 including stripping the building down to its original structure, new walls were built throughout, patched existing roof, replaced 133 windows, replacement of all finishes and complete upgrade to existing mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems as well as enlargement of the existing elevators. The new design included two student lecture halls, a “low-order” simulation lab and office space for the dean and Administrative Staff and Student Services.
