Bobby Alford Picnic Pavilion

The project aimed to transform a once beloved but abandoned gymnasium into a contemporary open-air pavilion for community gatherings and civic events while underscoring the city's commitment to enhancing public spaces. The renovation provides a much-needed addition to Georgetown’s East Bay Park allowing residents to safely gather, socialize, eat, and create the types of memories and connections that the old Bobby Alford Center once did. The reimagined pavilion allows for these cherished experiences while offering the safety of open-air gatherings and beautiful views of the Great Pee Dee and Sampit River.

Funded in part by a Community Development Block Grant, the project emphasized sustainability while reimagining the building for its new purpose. The renovation preserved much of the original structure, enhancing it to withstand seismic and high wind events common to the exposed location. Accessible parking and modern restroom facilities were added for inclusivity for all visitors.
